There are certain questions that come up again and again in my work as an animal communicator. One of the biggest is this: Why did this particular animal come into my life?
People ask it after adopting a rescue dog they instantly feel connected to. They ask it when a beloved cat seems to arrive at exactly the right moment in life. They ask it after losing an animal they loved deeply, wondering whether there was a greater purpose behind their time together.
It’s a wonderful question because it invites us to look beyond coincidence. Instead of seeing animals as companions we simply happen to own, we begin to see them as fellow souls sharing part of our journey.

Over the years, through my own relationships with animals and through thousands of animal communication sessions, I have found myself returning to the same realization again and again.
My feeling is that animals don’t come into our lives by accident. Whether they are with us for fifteen years or fifteen minutes, every relationship has the potential to change us.
Some animals arrive to bring laughter and lightness into our lives.
Others seem to appear during seasons when we need healing, comfort, or hope.
Still others challenge us in ways we never expected. They test our patience, stretch our hearts, and invite us to grow into a better version of ourselves.
That doesn’t mean every experience is easy.
It doesn’t mean every loss makes sense in the moment.
But when I look back at my own life, I can see that every animal who has walked beside me has left me with something I didn’t have before they arrived.
One of the biggest shifts I’ve experienced came when I stopped asking, ‘What is this animal here to teach me?’ and started asking a different question:
What are we here to learn together?
That subtle change transforms the relationship. Instead of seeing our animals as teachers standing in front of us, we begin to see them as partners walking beside us.
Every Animal Has a Unique Purpose
No two animals come into our lives for exactly the same reason.
Some become lifelong companions who quietly witness every chapter of our lives.
Others stay only briefly, yet leave an imprint we’ll never forget.
Sometimes an animal teaches us trust.
Sometimes courage.
Sometimes forgiveness.
Sometimes they simply remind us how to be present.
And sometimes they help us discover strengths we never knew we possessed.
What My Dog Taught Me
One of the animals who profoundly shaped my own journey was my dog , Harlow.
I wasn’t planning to adopt another dog. Yet I kept feeling an unmistakable inner pull that somewhere there was a dog waiting for me.
That feeling eventually led me to Best Friends Animal Society, where I met Harlow shortly after she had been rescued from the Los Angeles County shelter system.
The moment I met her, I knew.
There wasn’t a logical explanation. There was simply a deep sense that we belonged together.
A few days after bringing her home, we were out for a walk when I accidentally walked into a large spider web.
I instinctively reacted, throwing my arms up in surprise to clear away the web. Harlow was startled…she freaked out and slipped free from my grip and bolted into traffic.
I ran after her but she was too fast and was out of my sight.
For a few terrifying moments I thought I had lost her forever.
I stood out of breath and hopeless in the middle of the street traffic.
Suddenly in that moment, a stranger pulled over without saying a word and I immediately jumped into his car.
As we drove down the busy road, I called out the window for her and people walking along the street kept pointing us in her direction,
We soon ended up in a neighborhood where I jumped out of the car and found Harlow hiding in some bushes behind a house.
The man who drove me was gone when I went back out to the street.
To this day I’ve always felt that man was an angel and spirit guide taking care of us – one of those moments of divine orchestration that occasionally appears when we need it most.
But the deeper lesson came afterward.
As I reflected on the experience, I realized Harlow had shown me something about myself.
My own moment of panic had affected here. Up until then, I thought of myself as calm and grounded, but I was not that for her when she needed it and needed me most.
I recognized there was work to be done on myself and my own energy, so I could best support her in our new life together.
Harlow and this intense situation reminded me that our animals are constantly aware of our energy and that calm, grounded leadership isn’t just something we teach…it’s something we embody….in all moments.
That single experience became one of the greatest lessons of our relationship.
Together we began a journey where I strengthened my calm, confident energy and she surrendered to trust, safety, and leadership I provided.
Looking Beyond Soulmates
People often ask whether their dog or cat is a soulmate.
Personally, I believe soulmate animals exist. Sometimes there’s simply an inner knowing when you meet them.
But I also don’t think every meaningful relationship has to be a soulmate relationship to be sacred.
Every animal can be a teacher.
Every animal can help us evolve.
Every relationship has meaning.
A Heart-to-Heart Meditation With Your Animal
One meditation practice I encourage is wonderfully simple.
Sit quietly with your animal.
Take several slow breaths.
Imagine your heart connecting with your animal’s heart.
Allow yourself to become still.
Then ask:
What are we here to learn together?
Don’t rush for an answer.
You may receive a feeling, an image, a memory, or simply a deep sense of peace.
The practice isn’t about forcing communication. It’s about creating space for insight.
Every Relationship Is an Invitation
Whether your animal is bringing you joy, testing your patience, helping you heal, or accompanying you through one of life’s hardest seasons, I believe there is meaning in the relationship.
When we become curious instead of resistant, we begin to see those gifts more clearly.
The next time you look into your animal’s eyes, ask yourself not only why they came into your life, but what the two of you may be discovering together.
You may be surprised by what unfolds.
If you’d like support exploring your own relationship with your animal, I’d be honored to help through an animal communication session.
