When we use the word spiritual, we often think of a deep spiritual practice, meditation or connection to something beyond ourselves. But spirituality can also be about recognizing the spirit that exists within the animals who share our lives. As an animal communicator , I’ve found that learning to recognize an animal’s unique energy can also be a powerful way to deepen animal communication and strengthen our intuitive connection with them.
Every animal has a unique presence—an energetic signature or spiritual footprint that feels distinctly their own.
Learning to recognize, celebrate and feel that energy can deepen your spiritual connection with your pets while also strengthening your intuition and ability to communicate with animals.
And this practice isn’t limited to the animals who are physically here with us. It can also help us remain connected with animals who have crossed over.

What Does Your Animal’s Spirit Feel Like?
Think about one of your animals for a moment.
Beyond their appearance, behavior or personality, what does their spirit feel like to you?
Perhaps their energy feels peaceful and grounding.
Maybe it’s bright, expansive, playful or electric. It might feel nurturing, tender, wise, powerful, mischievous, warm or deeply connected to the earth.
Don’t worry about finding the “right” words.
Instead, allow yourself to feel into your animal and notice what naturally comes to you.
You may also associate a color with their spirit.
Again, don’t overthink it. Simply notice whether a color arises as you connect with the feeling of your animal.
For example, when I tune into my Australian Shepherd Buddy, I experience his energy as calm and grounding…almost like a soothing, lower vibrational hum.
He’s tender, loving, warm, humble, nurturing and incredibly present.
I associate Buddy with deep red, auburn and purple.
The red feels grounding, almost tribal and connected to the root chakra. Auburn reflects an earthy quality I feel within him, while the deep purple connects me with the spiritual depth, loyalty and almost regal quality of his presence.
Atticus feels entirely different to me. I associate him with blue and silver…expressive, vibrant, charismatic, enigmatic and electric.
His spirit feels powerful and highly tuned in, with what I experience as a platinum-like connection to the higher realms.
Luca’s energy feels tender, peaceful, warm and loving. I associate him with yellow, gold and white light. His spirit has a sweet, almost angelic quality to me…a bringer of light.
These aren’t intellectual descriptions I’m creating. I’m feeling into each animal and allowing my intuitive impressions to emerge.
And that’s the point of the exercise.
Recognizing Your Animal’s Energetic Signature
One of the things I encourage people to understand about animal communication is that it isn’t limited to receiving words or clearly defined messages.
Intuitive and telepathic communication can be subtle.
We may receive information through feelings, images, physical sensations, colors, thoughts, memories or simply a sense of knowing.
When you deliberately spend time becoming familiar with your animal’s energetic signature, you are essentially learning what they feel like to you.
That recognition can become an important foundation for animal communication.
If you already know the feeling of your animal’s presence, it can become easier to tune into them when you want to understand something more clearly, communicate guidance, navigate a challenge or simply connect.
You’re exercising what I often call your intuitive muscle.
Rather than straining to receive a message, you’re becoming more sensitive to the unique frequency of the animal with whom you’re communicating.
A Simple Meditation to Feel Your Animal’s Spirit
You don’t need a long or complicated meditation to practice this.
Take a few quiet moments and bring one animal into your awareness.
Your animal doesn’t even have to be physically beside you.
Close your eyes, focus gently on your breathing and allow yourself to think about them.
Then ask yourself:
What does my animal’s spirit feel like?
Notice the qualities that arise. How does their presence feel in your heart? What do you feel in your solar plexus or elsewhere in your body? What does their spirit ignite within you?
Is there a color you associate with them? A sensation? A vibration? A feeling of warmth, lightness, strength, peace or movement?
You can write your impressions down if you’d like. But most importantly, spend some time simply feeling them.
Try not to stop at surface-level personality descriptions such as “she’s calm” or “he’s energetic.” Those observations can certainly be part of what you experience, but see if you can go deeper.
What is the essence beneath the personality?
Sit with that feeling. Recognize it. Celebrate it.
You’re creating a deeper awareness of your animal’s unique spiritual and energetic presence.
Practice Recognizing Their Energy in Everyday Life
You can return to this practice whenever you want.
Take a few moments while sitting together on the couch, spending time outside or walking with your animal. Notice their energy and see whether there are certain qualities that remain consistent.
Your impressions may shift from one day to another, but you may also discover a core energetic signature that feels unmistakably like them.
Then begin paying attention to what happens when you’re not deliberately trying to connect.
Perhaps you’re away from home and suddenly experience a feeling you strongly associate with your animal.
Maybe a particular color catches your attention and immediately makes you think of them.
A sound, sensation, image or unexpected thought may evoke the same energetic qualities you’ve learned to recognize.
Instead of automatically dismissing the experience, pause.
Feel into it.
Open yourself to the possibility that there may be intuitive communication occurring.
The more familiar you become with the feeling of your animal’s spirit, the easier it can become to recognize these subtle moments of connection.
Connecting With Animals in the Afterlife
This practice can also be meaningful when connecting with an animal who has crossed over.
While I was recording the video that inspired this post, a butterfly began flying behind the camera.
It immediately brought my dog Dasher, who is in spirit, into my awareness.
As I felt into Dasher, I remembered the particular qualities I associate with her…scrappy, electric, charismatic and blue.
It was actually a beautiful example of what I was talking about in that very moment.
When we remember and celebrate the energetic signature of an animal in the afterlife, we can become more receptive to the subtle ways their presence may continue to touch our lives.
Perhaps you associate your animal with a particular color, and one day that color seems to jump out at you unexpectedly. It catches your attention, you immediately think of your animal, and then you notice something else happening around you.
Animals in spirit can use elements of our environment to get our attention. For me, that can include birds, butterflies, trees, a breeze, a scent or other aspects of the natural world.
The point isn’t to constantly search for signs or assign spiritual significance to everything around us. It’s to become more open and receptive.
When something catches your attention and evokes the familiar feeling of your animal, allow yourself to pause. Notice what you’re feeling and what else may be happening around you.
Let the Environment Become Part of the Communication
I sometimes think of the environment as becoming part of the communication line between us and our animals.
Imagine, for example, that I’m traveling away from home. Suddenly I notice a deep rhythmic or tribal sound around me and, at the same time, the color purple repeatedly catches my attention.
Those happen to be qualities I strongly associate with Buddy.
Could Buddy be thinking about me at home and connecting with me intuitively or telepathically?
I remain open to that possibility.
It’s almost like the old childhood experiment of connecting two cans with a string.
Our intuition, energy, nature and synchronicities can become part of the “string” through which we recognize our connection with our animals.
And this isn’t limited to animals in the afterlife. Our living animals can also connect with us intuitively when we’re apart.
Strengthening Your Intuitive Connection With Your Animal
You don’t have to force animal communication.
In fact, trying too hard to receive something can sometimes make intuitive communication more difficult.
Instead, start by becoming deeply familiar with the spirit of the animal you love.
Notice them.
Feel them.
Celebrate the qualities that make their presence unmistakably their own.
Over time, you may find that you’re not only recognizing your animal at a deeper spiritual level.
You’re also strengthening your own intuitive awareness and becoming more sensitive to the subtle ways animals communicate with us.
Whether your animal is sitting beside you or has crossed into spirit, take a few moments today to close your eyes and ask:
What does my animal’s spirit feel like?
Then don’t try to answer entirely with your mind.
Allow yourself to feel the answer.
You can also dive deeper into these ideas in my book, Intuitive Animal Communication, where I share additional stories, exercises, and practical ways to strengthen your intuitive connection with animals.
