One of the most common questions I hear as an animal communicator is: “How do I know if the messages I’m receiving are really from my pet, or if I’m just making them up in my head?”
This is a completely natural concern, especially if you’re new to intuitive, telepathic, or energetic communication with animals. When we quiet our minds and tune in, it can be hard to tell whether the answers we’re receiving are truly from our pets—or simply our own thoughts, wishes, or emotions coming through.

But here’s the truth: Animals are always energetically communicating with us…and we are always energetically communicating with them.
The challenge isn’t whether they are communicating—it’s whether we are clear and open enough to truly receive their messages.
If you’ve ever doubted yourself, know that you are not alone. Let’s explore a simple process to help you discern between your pet’s true messages and your own mind’s chatter.
Step 1: Shift Into Neutral & Ground Yourself
Before tuning into your pet, take a moment to clear your energy and move into a neutral, open state. This is important because if you’re feeling anxious, worried, or emotionally charged, those emotions may color the messages you receive.Try this:
Take a few deep breaths and imagine your energy settling.
Place your feet flat on the floor and visualize roots grounding you into the earth.
Let go of any expectations of what you “should” receive.
This step helps you become a clearer channel for your pet’s communication rather than filtering their messages through your own emotions.
Step 2: Ask & Receive – Without Overthinking
Once you feel centered, focus on your pet and ask a clear, simple question. For example:
What do you need from me right now?
How are you feeling today?
Is there anything you’d like me to know?
As you ask, pay attention to the first thing that comes through—whether it’s a feeling, an image, a word, or a knowing. True intuitive messages arrive quickly and feel subtle. If you find yourself analyzing, second-guessing, or trying to force an answer—pause. Overthinking often means your logical mind is getting involved.
Step 3: Check the Energy of the Message
One of the easiest ways to know if a message is truly from your pet is to tune into how it feels.
Here’s a simple guide:
If it’s from your pet:
It feels neutral, simple, or unexpected.
It may be brief and direct.
The message might surprise you (it’s not something you were already thinking about).
It carries their personality—you can sense their unique energy in the response.
If it’s from your own mind:
It feels overanalyzed or like a mental monologue.
It mirrors your own fears, anxieties, or expectations.
It’s long-winded or complicated (animals usually communicate concisely).
You find yourself doubting or “editing” the message.
Example: Imagine you ask your dog, “What do you want me to know?”True message: You suddenly see an image of the backyard, and a feeling of excitement comes through—your dog might want more outdoor time.
Mind-made message: You start thinking, “Well, I haven’t taken them on a long walk today, so maybe they’re mad at me. Maybe I should have given them extra treats earlier…”
See the difference? One is a clear, simple insight, and the other is a mental spiral.
Step 4: Validate the Message with a Small Test
If you’re still unsure, try validating what you received in a simple, non-stressful way.For example:
If you received an image of your cat’s water bowl, check if it needs refilling.
If your horse suddenly sent you a feeling of tightness, gently check their body to see if they’re sore.
If your pet’s message felt like they wanted more attention, spend a few extra minutes with them and notice their reaction.
When you start to see patterns of accuracy, your confidence in your ability to receive their messages will grow.
Final Thoughts: Trust & Practice
The key to intuitive animal communication is trust and practice. The more you listen to your pets from a neutral and open space, the more you’ll recognize the difference between their messages and your own mind’s noise. It’s okay to question yourself in the beginning—this is part of the learning process. But your pets want to communicate with you, and they will continue to send you signs, feelings, and messages.
So next time you doubt yourself, take a deep breath, shift into neutral, and simply listen. Your pet is speaking. You just have to trust yourself enough to hear.
